Moringa oleifera Lam. is a plant in the Moringaceae family native to India (the Himalayas) and grown in tropical and subtropical areas.

This plant is widely known for its multiple beneficial effects, especially due to its high contents of nutrients like vitamins, minerals, amino acids, beta carotene, antioxidants, anti-inflammatory elements and fatty acids.

Traditionally, moringa was given the nickname of “miracle tree” because of its elevated health-promoting potential. The seeds of Moringa oleifera have aroused scientific interest as they are rich in significant amounts of oil (up to 40%) and are composed of high quality fatty acids (oleic acid > 70%). The seeds of Moringa oleifera have been revealed as a promising resource for dietary and non-dietary applications due to their content of monounsaturated fatty acids, their high monounsaturated/saturated fatty acid ratio, their sterol and tocopherol content and their protein, which is rich in sulfated amino acids.

The FOA (U.S. Food and Agriculture Organization) is promoting awareness and consumption of moringa, and since 2018 has listed it as a superfood, one of the foods that can help to fight the plague of malnutrition in the world.

Many studies have spotlighted moringa’s numerous properties, especially emphasizing its positive action on blood cholesterol levels, thanks also to its unsaturated fatty acid content.

As has been shown in the most recent studies, oral consumption of moringa extract shows significant results on blood sugar and is an excellent aid in losing excess weight.
